The 2025 GT Cup Series roared back to life in spectacular fashion at Austria’s Red Bull Ring, where teams and drivers gathered from 16–18 May to open a new chapter of the championship. After the long winter break, it was finally time to battle for trophies and all-important championship points.

The season got underway at the fast and flowing Red Bull Ring, offering fans top-class racing from a variety of sports car classes. The standout category in both numbers and pace was GTX, featuring competition between cars from KTM, Lamborghini, Pagani and Lotus. Austrian drivers dominated on home soil, with Jack Russel from MZR Motorsportzentrum Ried team winning both Sunday sprint races in an Austrian-built KTM X-BOW GT2. The MZR team also found success in Saturday’s endurance race, where the pairing of Rupert Atzberger and Reinhard Kofler took the top step.

The premier class of GT racing – GT3 – also delivered in Austria, with a German showdown between BMW and Mercedes machines. Ultimately, it was BMW that emerged victorious in two of the three races. Rudolf Beňo and Richard Gonda guided their Aries Racing BMW M4 GT3 to glory in Saturday’s endurance contest, with Beňo securing another win in the second Sunday sprint. The opening sprint, however, went the way of Polish driver Piotr Wira in a Mercedes-AMG GT3.

While GT4 cars don’t match the outright pace of their GT3 counterparts, what they lacked in speed they made up for in numbers and nail-biting action. Red Bull Ring hosted an exciting GT4 field featuring Mercedes, Porsche, Lotus and, for the first time, Aston Martin – with closely-fought battles from start to finish in both sprint and endurance formats.

Buggyra ZM Racing claimed both sprint wins in their Mercedes-AMG GT4, though the results hardly tell the full story. Rookie Filip Nedoma made his car racing debut, thrilling the crowd in a fierce fight for the lead with fellow newcomer Troy Sovička. In the end, Nedoma held off Sovička’s Lotus by just under three-tenths of a second. The second sprint brought more of the same: this time, experienced racer Martin Hudec took over from Nedoma and once again battled Sovička in a tense back-and-forth. The result? Another victory for the German marque – this time by less than two-tenths. In the endurance race, it was Miha Primožič and Mathias Lodi who emerged victorious for Lema Racing in a Mercedes-AMG GT4.

All told, GT4 served up a brilliant dose of adrenaline-filled racing, and with packed grids across every category, fans were treated to non-stop action throughout the weekend.
